VALLEY — The city of Valley’s 2020 street paving program got underway on Monday. A crew from the city’s Public Works Department did some last-minute curb work before the big machines from Chris Clark Grading & Paving got moving on 31st Street, the city street that connects Shawmut Circle with 29th Boulevard near the Shawmut Nazarene Church.

When work is finished on that street, paving will then take place on 33rd Street, which branches off the Circle at Bob Harding-Shawmut Elementary School.

“If all goes well, we could have these two streets plus 48th Street paved this week,” Public Works Director Patrick Bolt said.

48th Street connects Highway 29 with EAMC-Lanier Hospital.

The city’s major paving project for the current fiscal year has already been taken care of when Valley Industrial Boulevard which runs behind the Lanier-Carter site was resurfaced. It was a complicated job involving some drainage work and was delayed by rain.

Bolt said that the paving of a Cleveland Road and a portion of Columbus Road are the longest sections left to pave this year. The small portion of Hopewell Road that’s in the city limits will also be resurfaced.

A portion of 29th Boulevard in Shawmut was paved last year. The remaining portion will be paved this year. 15th Avenue East and 65th Street will also be resurfaced this year.
