Springwood girls basketball team lost a heartbreaker on Thursday night as the Lady Wildcats fell to area foe Lee-Scott Academy 37-36 at home.

Ultimately, this felt like a game that Springwood let slip away. The Lady Wildcats led all the way until 1:31 in the fourth period.

Up by one with just over five minutes left in the game, Springwood deployed the “stall ball” tactic. The Wildcats held the ball for more than three minutes of game time, and the Warriors were more than willing to watch the time dwindle away.

After holding the ball for three minutes, Springwood found itself at the line and connected on one of two free throws to take a two-point lead. Lee-Scott promptly went down the court and connected on a three-pointer to take a one-point lead with 1:31 remaining in the fourth period. One point was all the Warriors needed as Lee-Scott held that lead for the remainder of the game.

Even in a loss, Shalexia Little was completely dominant for Springwood. Little led the way for the Wildcats with 19 points, eight rebounds, four rebounds and one block. Tori Patillo followed Little with seven points.

Free throws were an issue for the Wildcats as they connected on just four of their 11 attempts from the charity stripe. Springwood also connected on three of its 10 attempts from behind the arc.

The loss on Thursday dropped Springwood to 13-5 on the season. The Wildcats will be looking to end a two-game losing streak as they face off with Glenwood on Jan. 23.
