The Lanett Restoration Committee and the city of Lanett are hosting a litter cleanup day on Jan. 13. Volunteers are invited to join the group at city hall at 9:30 a.m. before splitting up to clean up litter around local neighborhoods.

The event was organized by the Lanett Restoration Committee and Mayor Jamie Heard, who founded the committee last year. The Lanett football and basketball teams and other local groups will be volunteering for the day as well.

“We need to clean up this town, and there’s just way too much litter everywhere,” said Ron Kalman of the Lanett Restoration Committee.

The cleanup will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., according to Kalman. Afterward, the committee will be providing lunch to volunteers. Coach’s and Pokey’s in West Point, Guthrie’s, McDonald’s, Domino’s and Pizza Hut will be donating food for lunch.

Lanett Restoration Committee held a two-day citywide cleanup day last year where residents could bring old appliances, furniture and other items to dump. After the success of the event, the committee decided to continue working on projects to help beautify the city.

“Our goal is to help change people’s attitudes and perspectives about the town that they live in,” Kalman said. “To not litter their streets and to keep their neighborhood clean and make it pleasant for everybody else.”

Kalman said they hope to lead by example and encourage a more positive attitude toward litter in the city.
