The Chambers County Commission expressed interest in purchasing the building that houses the Chambers County Community Health and Wellness Center from the City of LaFayette. 

Commission chairman, James Williams spoke at the LaFayette council meeting on Wednesday night.

“[The Wellness Center] has been a great asset to Lafayette and the surrounding area…What are your plans for that?” Williams said. “we would like to maybe work out something with the city where we took over the building. 

Williams added that the only reason for his visit to the council was to ask them to think about selling the building. There was no action taken by the city council on Wednesday. 

Rachael Snoddy of the county extension office and Hollie Cost of Auburn University spoke to the Commission on Monday about the center and its future.

They discussed a grant they would like to pursue to fund the completion of renovations on the building. Because the city owns the building, they would be responsible for the project, Cost said. 

The center is hoping to finish renovating the four wings of the building and repaving the parking lot. Snoddy and Cost are hoping to apply for funding through the U.S. Senate Office of Tommy Tuberville. The cost of the renovations is quoted at $675,000.

We definitely want to pursue any grants that are possible. But as you know, we don’t own that building,” said Skip McCoy at the meeting. “So we’re in the process now of working through some logistics on that to see if we might be able to make things more accommodating for the county and for the project.”
