Eli Johnson puts together complete performance as Wildcats sweep Southern Prep

Springwood’s baseball team put together its most complete performance of the season as the Wildcats swept a doubleheader against Southern Prep 15-0 and 15-3. 

Springwood started out hot in game one as Eli Johnson got the Wildcats on the board with an RBI single. Austin Hanvey then put Springwood up 2-0 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning. Tucker Sides drove in the next run and later scored on an error. Greg Johnson drove in the final run of the inning in with a single to give Springwood a 5-0 lead. 

Three more runs scored in the bottom of the second inning on passed balls before a bases-loaded walk and a ground out made the score 11-0. The Wildcats added one last run in the inning on a passed ball.

Sides brought the game to an end in the bottom of the third inning as his three-RBI triple triggered the mercy rule. 

Eli Johnson got the start on the mound in game one and dominated Southern Prep. Johnson allowed just one hit and struck out eight batters in three innings. Johnson also led the way at the plate with three hits. Sides finished 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs. 

Game two was more of the same for Springwood as the Wildcats took the lead on an RBI double from Hanvey in the bottom of the first inning. Johnson then scored on a passed ball before Sides drove in Hanvey with a double. Brayden Moseley scored on a passed ball, and then Sides did later in the inning to give Springwood a 5-0 lead. 

Southern Prep scored in the top of the second inning on a passed ball, but Springwood piled it on in the bottom of the second. Johnson and Moseley scored on passed balls before Sides scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-0. 

Southern Prep added two more runs in the top of the third inning to keep the game alive. Springwood scored two more runs on passed balls in the bottom of the third inning and Johnson drove in another run with a single. Johnson later scored on a wild pitch and Moseley later scored on a wild pitch. The Wildcats added two more runs in the inning to make it 15-3. 

Johnson led the way in game two at the plate as he went 3-for-3 with three runs and one RBI.

Sides got the start on the mound and allowed three earned runs and struck out five batters in 2 ⅓ innings. 

The wins on Tuesday pushed Springwood to 6-7 on the season. Up next for the Wildcats is a matchup against Glenwood on April 1.
