Lady Skyhawks sweep LaGrange College on the road

Point’s softball team found its way back into the win column on Wednesday as the Lady Skyhawks dominated LaGrange College on the road and swept the Panthers in a doubleheader. 

 

Game One:

Point was rolling early on in the doubleheader as the Lady Skyhawks shutout the Panthers to take game one. 

The Skyhawks got the scoring going early on as Hannah Phillips scored on an error in the top of the first inning. The fielding mistakes by the Panthers allowed Point to take control of the game as Ramsey Clark scored on an error in the top of the third inning. Then, Tia Coleman drove in Caylee Quarles, who reached on an error, to give the Skyhawks a 3-0 lead. 

Clark continued making plays for Point in the top of the fourth inning drove in a run with a single and later scored on a passed ball to give the Skyhawks a 5-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Clark along with Burkett and Phillips led the way for Point as the trio combined for seven hits in the game.
Brooke Burkett added the final insurance run for the Lady Skyhawks on an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning. 

Katelyn Jiles got the start for Point in game one and had one of her best outings this season. Jiles allowed four hits, no runs and struck out seven batters in seven innings on the mound. 

 

Game two: 

Point – 11

LaGrange – 1

 

The Lady Skyhawks had an even more dominant outing in game two of the doubleheader as Point downed LaGrange College 11-1. 

Clark got it started for the Skyhawks again in game two as she drove in a run with a groundout in the top of the first inning. Savanna Bryant helped Point stretch the lead to two with an RBI single in the inning. 

The second inning was a disaster for the Panthers as the Skyhawks blew the doors open at the plate. Phillips got it started in the top of the second inning with an RBI single. Another fielding mistake cost LaGrange as the Skyhawks went up by four on an error. 

A bases-loaded walk from Quarles drove in another run in the top of the second inning for Point. Coleman gave the Lady Skyhawks a dominant lead with a two-RBI double. Bryant added the final run in the inning for Point with a sacrifice fly to give the Skyhawks an 8-0 lead. 

LaGrange College scored its lone run in the doubleheader in the bottom of the third inning as Hannah Barnett scored on an error. 

Coleman stayed hot at the plate in the top of the fourth inning as she hit a two-run home run over the left field fence. Kayden Helton added the final run for Point on a sacrifice fly in the same inning. 

Phillips and Coleman led the way for Point as they both went 3-for-3. Phillips finished with one RBI while Coleman finished with four in the game. 

The sweep on Wednesday ended a four-game losing streak for the Skyhawks. Point currently sits at 5-15 with a matchup at home against Thomas on Saturday.
