The Lanett City School District has announced the school board will be taking applications for the unexpired term of the longtime District 3 board member Tony Edmondson.
Edmondson died in January.
Normally, board members are elected to their positions, however, if a member’s term is unexpired, the board can appoint someone to the seat.
There are requirements for the position, outlined in the LCSD board policy 2.11.
According to the policy, the four requirements are: “A Board member must be a resident of the City of Lanett, a Board member must not be a member of the City Council, a Board member must be of good character and fitness, no Board member may be subject to the authority of the Board.”
Being “subject to the authority of the board” is being employed by the board. For Edmondson’s seat, the individual must also be a resident of District 3.
“Whatever district three is with city elections, that’s going to be district three, for this particular board seat,” Boyd said. The district encompasses much of the northwestern parts of the city.
A map of the districts can be found on the city’s website.
LCSD Superintendent Jennifer Boyd said that the remaining term is for one more year. Should the appointed member want to remain for another term, they would have to be elected.
“We are looking for someone that is devoted to public education that has a genuine interest in public education … Someone with good ethics and someone who is willing to come in and be an asset to the board,” Boyd said.
For those interested in applying, Boyd asks letters of interest and resumes be sent to her at the school board central office, located at 105 North Lanier Ave. The deadline for submissions is March 29 at 4 p.m. ET.
