Skyhawks comeback to win series against Middle Georgia State

The Point Skyhawks finished off the series with Middle Georgia State on Thursday. The Skyhawks came from behind to beat the Knights 8-6 and win the series. 

Point came into the bottom of the sixth inning trailing by two. Then, the Skyhawks erupted for six runs in the inning and took an 8-5 lead. 

Rafael Jackson got the scoring started for the Skyhawks in the bottom of the sixth inning as he scored on a passed ball. Mason Davis then drove Zeb Baird in on a sacrifice fly to cut Middle Georgia State’s lead to just one.

Alex Marquand opened the game up for the Skyhawks as he drove in three runs on a double in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Point its first lead of the game. Sade Mink then drove in Marquand with a single to give the Skyhawks an 8-5 lead. 

Marquand led the Skyhawks at the plate on Thursday as he went 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Marquand has been one of the more consistent hitters for the Skyhawks this season, currently carrying a .323 batting average with four home runs, eight runs and 18 RBIs. 

Middle Georgia State added one run in the top of the eighth inning as Yariel Diaz cranked a solo home run to center field, but the Knights were limited on offense for the rest of the game. 

The matchup between the Knights and Skyhawks on Thursday ended up having no shortage of offense, but the game was a defensive battle early on. 

Both teams were held scoreless through the first four innings. Cameron Seiwert got the start on the mound for the Skyhawks. Seiwert saw more base traffic on Thursday than he is used to, but early on he was able to tightrope out of danger. 

Seiwert had two runners on with no outs in the top of the third inning before he turned a bunt attempt into a double play. In total, Seiwert pitched six innings and allowed 12 hits and three earned runs. Seiwert also struck out eight batters. 

Jacob Pierce got the scoring started for the Knights as he roped a double into left field in the top of the fifth inning to give Middle Georgia State a 2-0 lead. 

Point quickly answered back as the Skyhawks came alive at the plate in the middle innings. Davis got it started for the Skyhawks as he hit one over the left field wall to tie the game at two apiece. 

The Knights snatched the lead back in the top of the sixth inning as Diaz drove in two with a home run to left field. JT Rice then pushed the Knights’ lead to three with a single. 

Cole Johnson, Sage McWaters and Joshua Castillo all pitched one inning of relief for the Skyhawks on Thursday. The trio combined to allow just one earned run and three hits. 

The win on Thursday gave the Skyhawks a 2-1 series win over Middle Georgia State. Point now sits with a 15-7 record on the season. Up next for the Skyhawks is a road game against Truett-Mcconnell on March 12.
