Lady Rebels survive and advance in tight opening round doubleheader

The Lady Rebels survived and advanced on Monday as Chambers Academy swept Autauga Academy at home to advance to the second round of the playoffs. 

 

Game One: Chambers Academy – 9 Autauga Academy – 7

Chambers Academy earned the early advantage in the round one series with a 9-7 win over the Generals. 

Autauga Academy had the early advantage as the Generals scored on a single in the top of the first inning before taking a 2-0 lead on an error in the top of the fourth inning. 

The Rebels rallied in the bottom of the fourth as Gabby Coleman ripped a single through the infield to score one. Autauga Academy’s defense was sloppy in the inning as MaKenzie Gilliland bunted to third on an error and two runs scored. The inning continued to snowball as Sophie Price drove in another run with a single and Makayla Foster’s double drove in two more. Olivia Daughtey capped off the inning with an RBI single to give Chambers Academy a 7-2 lead. 

The Generals quickly struck back as a run scored on a wild pitch before two more runs scored on a triple. The triple nearly scored four runs, but Allie Paschal threw a rocket from left field to preserve the 7-5 lead. Two more runs scored on wild pitches to tie the game at seven. 

Blakely Allen added a run on a squeeze to score Price. Then, the Rebels sealed the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as Foster hit a no-doubter over the right field wall. 

Allen got the start in the circle for Chambers Academy and allowed five hits, five earned runs and three walks while striking out four batters in 4 ⅓ innings. Foster got the save out of the bullpen as she allowed two hits, one earned run and two walks while striking out four batters in 2 ⅔ innings. 

Foster led the way at the plate for the Rebels, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Coleman went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs. 

 

Game Two: Chambers Academy – 5 Autauga Academy – 3

 

The Lady Rebels got things started early in game two of the doubleheader as Foster cranked a double into right field to score a run in the top of the first inning. 

The Generals answered in the bottom of the second inning with a solo shot, but Chambers Academy took the lead again in the top of the fourth inning as Gilliland scored after Madison Stanford hit a ground out. 

Autauga Academy tied things up at 2 in the bottom of the fifth as a run scored on a passed ball, but the Rebels took control of the game in the top of the sixth inning. 

Hadley Helleso had her biggest hit of the day as she drove in a run with a triple in the top of the sixth inning. Then, Stanford scored on an error before Daughtrey drove in the final run of the inning with a single to give Chambers Academy a 5-2 lead. 

The Generals cut the lead to two with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning and got a runner on base in the bottom of the seventh inning. Helleso shut things down in the last half inning as she struck out two batters and forced a ground out. 

Helleso got the save as she allowed just two hits and one earned run in 3 ⅓ innings of work. Foster got the win as she allowed one earned run in 3 ⅔ innings. 

Foster and Daughtrey led the way at the plate again for Chambers Academy, finishing with two hits and one RBI apiece. Price added two hits for the Rebels. 

Chambers Academy now sits at 17-24 on the season. The Rebels have had inconsistencies at times, but they hope to be hitting their strike going into the second round.
