On April 18 the city of West Point will participate in the Great American Clean Up. West Point employees will be going city-wide to pick up litter. Two groups of volunteers will go downtown and to E 10th Street.

The clean-up will go from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET. Community members and businesses are encouraged to come. The group is meeting at the Downtown River Park Pavilion, located next to the city hall. After downtown is picked up, volunteers will meet back at the pavilion for some lunch.

“Our goal is to have about 50 people participate and then we will provide all the supplies; we have the gloves and trash bags,” said Meghan Richardson, the city’s economic development director and organizer of the cleanup.

The Great American Clean-up is an annual event hosted over several months by cities and organizations across the country. Litter is collected, trees and plants are planted, and trails are maintained during the event.

The event is a part of the environmental organization, Keep America Beautiful, which has smaller affiliates. West Point is not an affiliate but will be participating in the clean-up. Since the inception of the event in 1999, over 23 million pounds of trash has been collected.
