LANETT — The Springwood boys soccer team (1-0) opened the season with a 6-3 victory over Macon East on Tuesday night.

“It feels great to start off with a win as well as seeing how the guys reacted to adversity in the first game,” Springwood School head soccer coach John Lanier said. “That continued effort and fight is very encouraging for what may come throughout the season.”

Macon East threw the first punch in the match, jumping to a 3-1 lead before junior Coleman Hull scored his first goal of the night with 47 seconds remaining in the first half.

Macon East went on to go scoreless for the rest of the evening.

“Cason Knotts had a great game in goal for us and made some fantastic stops,” Lanier said. “Jonah Kelley did a great job defensively in the midfield and connected some great passes to help our attack.”

Springwood finished the game with five unanswered goals, led by Hull who scored four in the victory. Three of Hull’s goals came in the second half. Eric Fuller and Kannon Key also scored in the second half for the Wildcats.

“I was extremely proud of the team for not giving up down 3-1 and fighting back to take over the game,” Lanier said. “We had a lot of chances to score more in the first half but didn’t convert those opportunities. In the second half, we took advantage of those opportunities and put them in the back of the net.”

Springwood returns home next week on Feb. 19 to host Eastwood Christian at 6 p.m. EST.
