LANETT  — Thomas Nesbert Stone, 94, passed away on February 14, 2019, at Bethany House in Auburn.

Nesbert was born in Randolph County on May 14, 1924, to Robert William and Bessie Benefield Stone.

A memorial service will be held at Lanett First Methodist Church, Lanett, Ala. on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2019, at 3 p.m. EST. with Reverends David Bradshaw and Reid Turner officiating. A private family burial will be conducted at Oakwood Cemetery in Lanett.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, at Bluffton Funeral Services in Lanett from 5 until 7 p.m. EST.

Nesbert is survived by his wife, Deane Hill Stone, to whom he was married for 64 years; a son, Anthony (Marti) Stone of Huntsville, Ala. and daughter Julia (Jamie) Easton of Trussville, Ala. and great- granddaughter, Madelyn Claire Easton, of Trussville. He is also survived by special friends and caregivers Terri and David Sledge.

Nesbert was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Othelle Culberson and Marie Calhoun, and two brothers, Herbert Stone and Franklin Stone.

Nesbert graduated from Wadley High School, Wadley Ala. in 1941. After graduation, he was called to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he was a gunner/engineer on an A26 Invader. Upon returning from his tour of duty, he was employed by WestPoint Pepperell for 47 years. After retiring, he became a volunteer at Callaway Gardens for 28 years.

He met Deane Hill in 1953, and they were married in 1955. They joined Harrington Heights Methodist Church where they were very strong members, helping to build a new church building, teaching Sunday School, starting youth groups and going on to be leaders at Valley Youthwide Methodist churches.

They joined Lanett First United Methodist in 1970, where Nesbert served on the administrative board, was chairman of ushers and greeters and served on every committee. He also taught Sunday School for over 40 years. They were very active in visiting shut-ins and ill church members. He was a member of the Methodist Men’s Club and was honored by being selected as the 2015 Man of the Year.

Nesbert was known for planting bulbs and shrubs and trees on his property and really enjoyed sharing these with others. He will be greatly missed but remembered for every bloom that comes in his yard.
