LANETT — The Chambers County Courthouse Annex in Lanett has a new sign about twice the size of the previous sign.

The Chambers County Commission approved the purchase of the sign in December, and on Thursday, officially christened it with county officials.

The new sign is 8 feet wide and 5 feet wide and made of Corian countertop material, according to County Commissioner Sam Bradford. The sign sits on a pile of bricks laid by William Buddy Combs, a retired teacher at the Chambers County Career Technical Center. Bradford said he didn’t charge the county for labor.

The sign was designed by a committee and was created by Performance Signs out of Athens, Ohio. Bradford said nobody in Chambers County bid on the project. The sign cost the city about $7,500, Bradford said.

He said the sign has a 20-year guarantee and the material makes it easy to clean.

“It is another boost to add to what Mayor (Kyle) McCoy is doing for the City of Lanett,” Bradford said. “It is just another part.”

McCoy announced Tuesday that the city of Lanett and the Chambers County Development Authority purchased the Lanett mill site.

“We are all in this together,” Bradford said.

McCoy told County Chairman David Eastridge and Bradford after the presentation that adding the new sign was another example of the commitment by the Chambers County Commission to the city of Lanett.

Bradford said the old sign served its purpose. He said it faced the road, it wasn’t two-sided and the lettering was small. The new sign faces perpendicular to the road, with the name, address and the Chambers County logo on both sides of the sign.

Bradford said perception is reality and when people see this sign they will think it is a “first-class” sign.

“We want to present Chambers County as first class,” he said.
