Week 3 of regular season marks start of region play

The regular season is fully underway and a handful of local teams are even entering region play tonight.

Beulah (2-0) heads on the road to face Montgomery Academy for its first away and region game of the season. The Bobcats are coming off of a 56-0 win last Friday night over Ellwood Christian Academy. Sophomore running back Sondreikus Cooper ran for 104 yards and three touchdowns. Senior running back Chris Person also scored three touchdowns, while junior quarterback Kaleb Abneey completed 4-of-7 passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns. In 2018, Beulah squeezed out of its matchup with Montgomery Academy with a last-minute stop from senior defensive lineman Hunter Bryant to get a 27-26 victory.

AISA No. 4-ranked Chambers Academy (2-0) hosts Abbeville Christian tonight. The Rebels are coming off of a 35-28 win over Tuscaloosa Academy in a matchup that seniors called the “best team” they’ve faced since joining the varsity at Chambers. In 2018, Chambers Academy defeated Abbeville Christian on the road 41-14.

LaFayette (0-1) returns to the dawg pound tonight for its home-opener against regional opponent, Vincent. The Bulldogs are coming off of a 17-0 loss to crosstown rival Lanett. The team plans to honor former player Azerious D. “Zae” Brooks, the 2018 graduate who died at the age of 19 this past summer. In 2018, LaFayette shut out VIncent 40-0.

1A No. 5-ranked Lanett (2-0) travels to Wadley for the first road and regional game of the season. The Panthers have won 20 of their last 21 regular-season games. In 2018, Lanett defeated Wadley 33-15 at home.

Springwood (2-0) goes on the road to face Lowndes Academy. The Wildcats are coming off of a 35-20 victory over Cornerstone Christian last Friday night. Springwood did not have Lowndes on its schedule last season, the Rebels are currently 2-0 and are coming off of a 36-0 win over Sparta.

Valley (0-2) begins region action tonight at Beauregard. The Rams are coming off of a tough 16-6 loss at Smiths Station last Friday night in a game that got away from them in the final quarter. Valley has lost the first two games of the season by an average of seven points. Last season, Valley defeated Beauregard 41-20 at home.
