VALLEY — Things change as time goes on and this concept is exemplified at Chambley’s in Valley.

Opened in 1983 by George Chambley Sr., this outdoor store started out selling fireworks.

“We sold fireworks until about 12 to 15 years,” said George Chambley Jr., the current owner. “We stopped when the big stores opened up.”

Taking over the business sometime between 1987-88, Chambley has seen the store expand from fireworks to fishing bait and novelty items to a full-fledged outdoor emporium.

Currently the big seller is archery equipment and services. Chambley recalled getting into the archery business back in 1987.

“We sell a lot of archery equipment,” he said. “We also work on bows. We do a lot of that.”

Chambley noted there is a novelty to his store. If one were to drive past it, they would usually assume it to be nothing more than an old gas station.

“Not a day goes by that someone doesn’t walk and be surprised by the merchandise we carry,” he said. “The clothing options are the biggest surprise.”

Visitors to the store can pick up a variety of items, including fishing supplies, hunting gear, propane, kerosene, clothing and boots, alongside normal convenience store wares.

When it comes to adding items to sell, Chambley has certain criteria in mind.

“I like to get something that people can’t get in a big box store,” he said. “More niche items. It gives us an edge. Archery was kind of like that.”

Currently Chambley has four people working for him: a full-time employee and three part-timers.

He also receives help from his wife, Susie, and son, George Chambley III.

He also has two daughters, Abby and Hannah. Both are expected to graduation from the Auburn University this year.

“George helps out every now and then,” Chambley said. “We try to focus on the fact we are a family
owned business and that we give back to the community.”
